Revenue

Hire the sellers and builders who open the market.

Early GTM hires turn founder-led sales into a repeatable motion. The right ones close while they build the playbook. The wrong ones wait for a playbook that does not exist yet.

What early GTM hires really do

A founding account executive at a Series A company is not running a mature pipeline. They are working alongside the founder to figure out which segments buy, what messaging lands, how long cycles really take and what the product is missing. They should close revenue, and they should leave behind a process that the next three sellers can run.

A growth or GTM lead is the builder counterpart: outbound systems, content and demand, pricing experiments, and the data to tell which of them work. At AI startups this person is often technical enough to build the tooling themselves.

Hire for people who have done it at your stage. A seller who crushed quota at a 500-person company with marketing air cover often struggles when the pipeline has to be built from zero.

When to make this hire

  • A founder has closed the first several deals personally and can describe the pattern.
  • Inbound is arriving faster than the founder can follow up.
  • The company has a target segment and a price point, even if both are still moving.
  • You can articulate what a qualified opportunity looks like.

What strong candidates look like

  • A founding or early AE title at a company that was between seed and Series B when they joined, with revenue numbers they can speak to specifically.
  • Evidence they built something: a sequence, a qualification framework, a vertical motion, a partner channel.
  • Comfort selling a product that changes monthly to buyers who are still learning what it does.
  • Technical curiosity. The best AI sellers can run their own demos and explain how the product works.

How to interview

  1. Deal reviews. Two or three real deals they closed: how they found it, who the champion was, how it almost died, what the final price was and why.
  2. Discovery role play. A founder plays a prospect in your real segment. Judge the questions, not the pitch.
  3. Build exercise. Ask how they would spend their first 30 days building pipeline from nothing at your company. Specific, realistic answers only.
  4. Reference calls. Talk to a former manager and a former customer if you can.

Mistakes we see most

  • Hiring a VP of Sales before there is a repeatable motion for them to scale.
  • Hiring from big-company logos and expecting startup scrappiness.
  • Setting a quota before you have data on cycle length and deal size.
  • Underweighting equity in the offer. The candidates worth hiring are betting on upside.

How we run a GTM search

After a 30 minute intake on your segment, motion and comp plan, we go to sellers and growth operators we already know in San Francisco and New York, most of whom have done an early-stage build before. We talk to each one about your company, screen for stage fit, and send a short list with our read on each. Fees are paid by the company; candidates never pay.

Common questions

What is a founding account executive?

The first one or two sellers at a startup, hired once the founder has closed the earliest deals. They close revenue while helping build the repeatable sales process. They are expected to operate with less support and more ambiguity than an AE at a mature company.

Should my first GTM hire be a seller or a growth lead?

If deals are available but nobody has time to work them, hire the seller. If the problem is generating conversations in the first place, hire the growth lead. Many Series A companies hire one of each within a few months.

What stage companies do you work with for GTM roles?

Mostly Series A through Series C. Before Series A, founders are usually better off selling themselves until the pattern is clear.

Do you place sales leaders as well as individual sellers?

Our focus is the early team: founding AEs, early GTM and growth leads, and the first sales manager. We will tell you plainly if a search is outside our sweet spot.
